The Ice Cream Bean tree, scientifically classified as Inga edulis (or Inga spectabilis), is known for its fast growth and belongs to the Fabaceae family, which also includes familiar legumes like green beans, shelling beans, and peanuts. Typically, this tree starts producing fruits within just three years of germination.
This evergreen tree boasts a moderately dense crown, and its distinctive pods, which are approximately a foot in length, contain beans enveloped in a sweet, cottony pulp. When you taste this pulp, you'll notice its delightful flavor, which often resembles vanilla ice cream, sometimes with a hint of cinnamon. The texture of the pulp is akin to cotton candy.
Known by the common names Guama or Guaba, this tree's botanical names are Inga edulis and Inga spectabilis. It usually begins blooming and bearing fruit around the three-year mark after planting and generally requires a moderate level of maintenance.
