Soncoya Fruit, scientifically termed Annona Purpurea, is an edible fruit and medicinal plant belonging to the Annonaceae family. Native to regions encompassing Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America, it has earned recognition for both its fruit and its therapeutic applications.
The Soncoya fruit assumes a rounded and wide shape, featuring a felt-textured brown skin that can be challenging to cut open when fully ripe. Its surface is adorned with hook-like projections. The fruit houses numerous seeds, with a germination period spanning from 1 to 6 months. Trees generally take around 1 to 3 years to begin bearing fruit and can be grown in containers. This species shares close botanical ties with cherimoya, sugar apple, and other Annonas. However, the Soncoya is relatively obscure within the Annona family, as its fruit is considered of indifferent quality and has not garnered widespread cultivation. The fruit has a texture akin to soursop, which some may describe as stringy or fibrous.
Referred to by common names such as Soncoya, Sincuya, and Cabeza De Negro, its botanical name remains Annona Purpurea. Typically, Soncoya trees start blooming and bearing fruit within 4 to 5 years of growth, and they demand a moderate level of maintenance for successful cultivation.
