Rainforest Plum, scientifically known as Eugenia Candolleana, is an edible fruit tree indigenous to the Atlantic rainforest of Brazil. It is locally referred to by the Portuguese names Cambui Roxo or Murtinha. While relatively rare in the wild, it has gained some recognition in landscaping due to its vibrant green foliage and the attractive purple-black fruits it bears.
The fruit of the Rainforest Plum boasts a thin purple-black skin and surrounds a moist, firm, whitish pulp that envelops a single loose seed. The fruit is known for its delicious and sweet taste, resembling that of a jaboticaba. Varieties of Rainforest Plum come in both purple and red-fruited forms. In tropical regions, this tree is noted for its frequent blooming, occurring at least 4 to 6 times each year.
These fruits are not only a tasty treat but also rich in essential nutrients. They are a source of vitamin E, contain more Lutein than an Avocado, which is beneficial for eye health, and provide Zinc, Folate, Calcium, Potassium, and Magnesium. In the folk medicine of the Sergipe region, leaf infusions have been utilized to treat pain and fever.
With its botanical name being Eugenia Candolleana, Rainforest Plum plants typically begin to bloom and bear fruit within 2 to 3 years of growth. They require a moderate level of maintenance to flourish, making them a valuable addition to gardens and landscapes.
